This is Not What I Signed up for

This is not what I signed up for. The scramble to put the pieces together, the grasping at straws, the waiting for someone else to give me the green light. It’s exhausting and sometimes feels like I’m on a perpetual hamster wheel.

There may have been a minute or two when I thought that it would be so much easier not to care so much or work so hard, but then I remember how much I love my job! Every second of it. There is NOTHING I would rather do, and the people that I get to work with every day feed my soul and give me the drive to keep pushing forward.

There have been so many ups and downs over the last few years, and I am lucky that the positives have far outweighed the negatives thankfully, but the truth is: this is HARD! For all of us.

It is during these times that we take stock and re-evaluate what’s important in our lives. I take these opportunities to heart and see them as a chance for a do-over in whatever aspect of my life is not quite measuring up.

The first place to start is to slow down for a moment to reflect and regroup. There will always be time to jump back on the hamster wheel but for now, you need a minute and it’s okay to take it.

Here are a few tricks that have worked wonders for me…

  1. Take a break when you need it – that much-needed rest time is so productive for creativity and finding clarity in your goals and purpose, and it’s time much better spent than pushing yourself to do more on an empty tank.
  2. Sit down for a specified amount of time to do something other than tackle your To-Do list – even if it’s just for an hour. Read a book for leisure. Play a game (not on your phone). Paint-by-number is my new favorite.
  3. Reignite your passion for your work – choose a task that reminds you why you love your job and focus on that until you feel that spark again.

One step at a time, one day at a time, one breath at a time, and if it no longer feels right for your life, maybe it’s time for a do-over.
