The Top Tool to Decide What is Important in your Life

So…There are two things you might not know about me…

I love to draw AND I also love to get rid of stuff I don’t need anymore. I’m obsessed with purging my closets.

A couple of months ago, I took up sketch journaling, and I learned a really useful tool that combines both of these things and I want to share it with you as we start a new year. It’s called Let Go and Keep.

I’m not at all a resolutions person and I know that if I set a resolution, it would be broken by Jan 2, for sure.

Instead, for the last 10 years, I have chosen a word of the year to guide me through the next 12 months but I feel like I have maxed that one out.

Let Go and Keep is a great new approach that is perfect for the start of a new year but can also be done whenever you are taking some time to reflect on where you are right now and where you want to go. So it’s multi-purpose.

The most important part of this project is the act of physically writing and creating the visual. This boosts the learning and creative process, focuses your mind away from distractions, and makes cognitive connections you wouldn’t otherwise make by typing. So the point is, you’ll get way more out of this if you write it down.

So go ahead and get out a blank piece of paper and a pen.

Put your two hands on the page and find the right layout where you can fit both on the page.

Then take your pen and trace out each hand on the page. It’s not going to be cute.

At the wrist of each hand, write Let Go on one hand and Keep on the other. You get to decide which hand makes the most sense for which word.

Now, in each finger on the Let Go hand, start writing anything that you want to give up. This can be thoughts, feelings, physical items, anything. Once you fill your fingers, start filling up your palm.

Do the same on the Keep hand.

Here’s mine.

Don’t forget to write the date so you remember when you created this one, and it might be interesting to compare all the Let Go and Keep sketches that you do throughout the year to see how things evolve for you.

Now, there are lots of great benefits to going through this exercise…

  1. Allows you to take an inventory of how you are currently spending your time and energy.
  2. Gives you a chance to consider what is worth your valuable personal investment and what is not.
  3. Reveals choices that you can make to actively choose the things that benefit your life and let go of those things that are not serving you.
  4. Creates a powerful visual reminder that you can look at often to keep you on track all year

And if letting go of your money fears and financial worries is on your list, let’s find a time to chat. I love helping women entrepreneurs face their money fears and build confidence to see new possibilities so they can rediscover the love for their business and joy in their life with financial independence and security.
