Your Relationship with Money: Financial Security – v2, July 2024

As I write this, I just finished writing the check for the third unexpected bill of the year so far. They always start at tax time and come in 3’s so this should be it for a while (fingers and toes crossed). Luckily, I recognized this pattern a long time ago and planned ahead for the unexpected, phew, but it still feels like a sucker punch every time.

I know you relate to that pit-in-the-stomach feeling when this happens to you. Financial surprises are rarely good, and the whammies always far outweigh any short-term win-fall.

Without fail, our sense of security is rocked.

The thing is…

Security is a basic human need, and when we don’t have it, we scramble to reclaim it as quickly as possible. I always know when my security need is tested. Those anxious butterflies creep in, and I go into over-drive scrambling like a squirrel foraging for nuts.

When we feel confident that our security need is met, it undoubtedly has a ripple effect on our lives and financial well-being. Here’s how…

The Life Impact of Security

There are 5 key ways that a sense of security positively impacts your life. When you feel secure…

  1. There is a level of trust in your current situation that all is well without question.
  2. You can easily manage your feelings of overwhelm, fear, and stress.
  3. Life is more predictable and you are less vulnerable to surprises.
  4. You are in control of your own life.
  5. You feel safe in your surroundings.

The Financial Impact of Security

Just as much as security impacts your life, it equally influences your financial well-being. When you feel financially secure…

  1. You can make financial decisions based on how best to improve your life rather than simply to survive.
  2. You have the freedom to make financial choices simply because you know you can.
  3. You are confident in knowing how your money works and how to make it work for you.
  4. You have the financial agility to manage surprises with a plan to expect the unexpected.
  5. You have peace of mind about your present and your future so that you get to enjoy both.

Here’s a little tip for you…

Achieving financial security is so much more than paying your bills, buying a house, and planning for retirement. That, in itself, sounds like a lot, and seems impossible for many. To me, financial security is simply feeling safe and secure in making financial decisions that will better your life, period.

It is so difficult to make the best decisions for yourself when your head is scrambled with worry and stress about making ends meet. Ask yourself these two quick questions to allow yourself a moment of pause before making your next financial decision.

What kind of decisions do I make when I am stressed and worried about money?

What kind of decision do I want to make instead?

I have found that just taking that extra second to reflect on your way of thinking at that moment makes a huge difference in what you choose to do next. You open yourself to a breadth of possibilities and realize that you have choices you may have never considered. Most importantly, you reclaim control of your life.

Try that on and let me know how it goes for you.
